Class 55 Deltic out of Platform 3 in BR days at Peterborough

Class 55 Deltic leaving platform 3 at Peterborough station.

Peterborough in the 1970s and early 1980s had the swan song of the class 55, better known as the Deltic. These had taken over from the A4s A3s A1s and A2s after steam was removed in early 1960s.

The class 47 were also used on many trains with class 31s on the Peterborough to London local trains.

The HST replaced the Deltics on mainline trains and are still in use today

There were still parcel and mixed freights and first generation DMUs being used on local trains in the 1970s and the start of the 1980s.

GNER had the first Privatisation franchise in 1996 of the East Coast Main Line trains between London and Edinburgh and London and Leeds.

WAGN took over from Network South East and Central trains  took over from Regional Railways.

I took photos around the railways of Peterborough, in the 1970s-1980s.These photo's were taken on 35mm slides and prints in the BR days and cover the BR blue years. What seemed a lot of photos in those days with just a 20 slide film, seems nothing nowdays when you have thousands of shots on a card and carry a spare car in your bag.

class 31 ou of Westwood yard

Westwood Yard in Peterborough with a class 31 on a parcels train.

Note the 08 shunter and the mix of short wheel-base wagons

Westwood yard is now just a few siding for wagons. But new EMU sidings have been built n the yard for the Thameslink Peterborough to Gatwick and the south coast service. Parcels now go by by road and there is no single wagon service like there use to be.

class 47 on a fly-ash Train on the Stamford line at the site of Walton Crossing

The closed Walton level crossing with a class 47 with a fly ash train returning to a coal fired power station for more fly ash.

These fly ash train had there own Merry-Go-Round loop at Fletton south of Peterborough round a lake.

This Flyash loop is now closed and these flyash trains having stopped some years ago. The track has been removed as well the lake used to wash out the flyash. houses are now in 2018 being build on were the lake was.

Four class 31s at Peterborough Depot 31192 31198 31125 3 1403 plus one on the next line.

Four class 31s at Peterborough Depot class 31192  class 31198  class 31125 class 31403  plus one on the next line.

When New England shed closed locomotives were transfered to March shed. Peterborough Depot near the station was built to store the 08s and DMUs and locomotives on local passenger trains to Kings Cross. EWS took over these depot.
Peterborough railway station is on the busy East Coast Main Line (ECML) railway line from London to Scotland.

It is a very busy railway station with lots of trains to and from London and Scotland. There were and still are trains from Birmingham, Norwich, Cambridge and Lincoln. Also there are trains from Nottingham and Liverpool.

To the east of Peterborough there is the railway line which comes into Peterborough under the ECML from Ely. To North west a line comes into Peterborough alongside the ECML from Stamford and Leicester. There is also the line to Spalding and Sleaford to the North east.

As things change over the next few years at Peterborough, I hope to keep adding to this web site. We have now got some more platforms at Peterborough with lifts at last, So there will always be new photos to take.

Virgin East took over from East Coast at the start of March 2015 and have started to repaint the class 91s and mark 4s and DVTs. Now in 2018 LNER has taken over from Virgin and is removing Virgin logos and putting LNER ones in there place.

See Peterborough 2014 till today for more detail on these new platforms

I have been adding details and changed some of the  Peterborough parts of this web site as the station was being rebuilt.

Full details are on many of  Peterborough pages on this site.

Peterborough on this site is in now in three main parts
