Ketton Cement works still has its a lot of its cement moved by rail. it has a short branch line to the works off the Stamford to Leicester line. Trains of cement wagons are now moved from the exchange sidding by class 08 shunters now with an added Hanson number. The wagons are filled with cement from an hopper and returned by the O8s to the exchange sidings. Around three trains a week come to Ketton hauled by class DB class 66s. Cross Rail has used a lot of Ketton Cement taken to London by rail from here.
Class 08622 now with the number 19 at Ketton Cement works in 2015 at the Openday.
This Photo was a quick one from one of the bake vans just as we are about to go inside the the cement hopper.
You cannot get into the site normally, so when an open day was to be held it was a must go to event.
The site is very big. Hanson layed on a fleet of mini buses to take people around the site. Some of these buses went to the quarry were both the clay and the limestone used to make the cement come from.
Other mini buses went on a tour around the works site. Hanson layed on guides on each bus to help explane what each bit did. It all done on a very large scale.
The big round pipe on the left was turning and giving off a lot of heat!
There were lots of poeple at this event and it was very well put on. Top marks to every one from Hanson for putting on this event.
Ketton is on the line from Syston Junction to Peterborough. Most passenger trains are class 170 or 158 units from Birmingham via Leicester to Peterborough March Ely and Cambridge and to Stanstead airport. Container trains and stone hoppers and Ballast are the main freight trains and of course cemet trains to and from Ketton.
