Jacks Green at Orton Mere station

Jacks Green a 0-6-0ST at Orton Mere

Jacks Green at Orton Mere station

This photo was taken when Jacks Green had a Overhaul at Peter Botherhood's Peterborough factory which was then at Walton in Peterborough. Botherhood's had a rail connection to the ECML and a class 08 had brought the 0-6-0T back to the Nene Valley by way of Fletton junction and the GNR loop.

This Hunslet 0-6-0ST was built in 1953 and worked at the quarry at Nassington which is not far from Wansford.

Orton Mere station was built by the Nene Valley Railway (there was no station here) and at this time only had the one platform. The small temporary building that was used here at first can be seen in the background.

The class 5 had been overhauled at the Peter Brotherhoods works at Walton in Peterborough. This like a lot of firms had a rail connection. Peter Brotherhoods have now moved from this site and a Currys shop and some other shops were on the site. The site now has new shops.

The ECML is in the foreground in the photo above. There was open ground were I took this photo from which is now built on.

City of Peterborough had come to Peter Brotherhoods, for this major overhaul in 1977. It was undertaken as an apprenticeship project, and it took three years

The photo above was I think on the 6th July 1980. It was repainted not in the British Railways Black as it is painted today, but in BR Brunswick Green livery. Swindon works had painted some of the class 5's that it had overhauled there green. So the NVR decided to have 73050 painted the same green. The apprentice's made a top class job of the class 5.

Class 5 no.73050 had just been overhauled at Peter Brotherhood's at Walton in Peterborough. It had been brought by a class 08 to the Nene Valley along the ECML and round the Fletton branch in light steam. The class 08 had just left the class 5 at Orton Mere. The class 08 then returned  to Peterborough over the Fletton Branch.

The class 5 had to wait while it made enough steam for its first trip to Wansford. The engine was very clean and shiny. Some one had made sure that the finish was top rate.

Some one had even made a Headboard to mark the day.
