Under the ECML and past The Fair meadow Car Park
DMU in BR days coming under the ECML on the Peterborough March line.
Just after the River Nene is crossed the Peterborough to March line goes under the East Coast Main line (ECML) and alongside the Fair meadow car park. (This car park was were all the fairs were held and some times still are) In BR days you could take a good photo here, but trees were then planted alongside the line here and anti vandal fences put up.
The line to Rugby and Northampton had two tracks on this side to were the Nene Valleys Peterborough station is now the line to Peterborough station coming off the NVR line.
Two car DMU to March and Ely
A Class 25 on a PW train coming under the ECML
A Class 47 on the line to March and Ely next to Fair ground car park at Peterborough
This class 47 on a freight has just come under the ECML at Peterborough next to Fair ground car park . The Nene Valleys Peterborough station that is yet to be built and is now behind the ECML and just to the left. The class 47 still has it headcodes but has set them to 0000.
When the LNWR line was open (now the NVR) its juction was here . I think the track was moved over a bit here to make a better cuve towards the Peterborough (North) station.
The site of the East Station which had closed on the 6th June 1966 is behind us on the other side of the main town river bridge. There was a level crossing here which would stop the traffic into the main town centre be for the bridge was built.
The place were I am taking ths photo from now has a row large of conifers along the edge of the car park. You cannot now take photos from this spot.
A Class 31 on a Birmingham to Norwich train next to the Fairmeadow car park at Peterborough. The ECML bridge is in the background.
Class 08406 heads back to Peterborough depot after shunting at the PW depot near the football ground on the site of the old east station.
Note the state of the car park this was used more for fairs than cars at this time, hence the name Fairmeadow car park. The entrance to the NVR station is now via the two archs under the ECML on the right. The NVR did not have a station in Peterborough at this time.
Peterborough to March Railway line
The line then heads out to
Kings Dyke which is just outside Peterborough. On the to way to
Whittlesea we see the only brick works left around Peterborough, that are along this part of the line. There are now no rail sidings left as all the bricks now go by road.
Whittlesea has the only station which is a small basic station. The line then goes on to
Turves a small village in the fens with just a signal box and a few houses. It is then to on to
March this part of the line is in wide open flat fens, as is the next part of the line from March to Ely.
Peterborough on this site is in now in three parts BR 1970 to 1999 and 2000 till 2014 and 2014 till today
